Sky Girls 07
Sky Girls will be an easy show to blog about, since not much has happened up to episode 07. Fortunately, this anime has what it takes to maintain interest unlike *certain* others. (Nanoha Strikers) Episode 07 continues the trend of relatively meaningless missions, but manages to maintain something resembling suspense with yet another end of episode indication.
This time the girls prepare for to preform at the local airshow. Karen and Otoha are unstressed, much to Eika’s dismay; standard form for their archetypical relationship. However, their idyllic attitudes don’t last long. Eika is not too pleased when a visiting general mentions her father and his excuses for not coming. Eika’s comments during this conversation reveal her father-complex; she feels ignored and wants to prove herself. Typical anime fare for a tsundre character, but I’m sure this will come into play later in the anime. Karen is also disappointed when she cannot find her beloved Ani at the air show where she had planned to meet him.
Otoha gets the most interesting treatment. Just before the girls were scheduled to fly, their timeslot got bumped back by famous pilot Vic Viper and his new fighter. The arrogant Viper meets Otoha while checking out the Sonic Drivers and, needless to say, it doesn’t go well.
Once again, their run is interrupted by an emergency and all support vehicles are recalled to a nearby landslide. After a helicopter breaks down, Otoha gets the idea to go and assist in the rescue operations with the Sonic Drivers. After a bit of discussion, they head out and save several people, getting much publicity and grudging respect from the observing generals and officers.
Finally, right at the end of the episode, Togo is informed of the reemergence of the WORMS and the destruction of a base in Europe. The Sky Girls’ command ship is also revealed. The anime is slowly making it’s way to where the OVA began. Only a couple more episodes until some real action.
So what exactly makes Sky Girls worth watching? It’s certainly not the sort of material in this episode. Nothing in the first 7 episodes is particularly enthralling, but I really look forward to how the three relatively innocent main characters will handle real combat. There is a lot of room for character development once the fighting begins. How the writers handle the psychology of battle will soon make or break this series; it still has a good shot at being something more than a light shounen mecha, in the end.
